Situated on Chak Jhumra road in District Faisalabad, Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School (GMGHSS) 202 RB Gatti is one of the well-kept schools in the area despite of the old construction. Constructed in 1981, the school has sprawling grounds, and has only the basic facilities. The school has a stable enrolment, currently 2,485 student’s enroled. Existing infrastructure with 34 classrooms and 34 toilet facilities provided inadequate space to accommodate existing students and levitating the student classroom ratio to 73:1. As the only girls’ high school in the locale, the school faced severe overcrowding, since it caters to the surrounding factory-town. Along with overcrowding the school building lacked toilet facility. Additionally, one of the school’s block was in ruins and unsafe. The dismal condition of the school, which had worsened due to long neglect of school management impacted adversely on educational outcomes.
Humqadam-SCRP’s baseline and technical surveys indicated need for additional infrastructure at GGHSS RB-202 Gatti to address over-crowding issue and replacing the dangerous academic building into safe learning environment. As a result, the old dangerous building was demolished and construction of new academic block began in September 2015. In 13 months’ time, Humqadam-SCRP constructed a new academic block having 25 new classrooms and 22 new toilet cubicles. The additional infrastructure is sufficient to accommodate the existing students as well the burgeoning student enrolments. The new school’s building has addressed overcrowding issue, the student classroom ratio has dropped to 42:1. The new building provided by Humqadam-SCRP is following simplest design standards including sandwich panel roofing and air wells for more durable and well ventilated structure. The academic blocks are also made accessible for differently abled children and the classrooms noise proof fostering conducive learning environment.
UK aid through Humqadam-SCRP aims to improve the infrastructure of government schools of Punjab province by constructing quality classrooms and providing toilet facility. As of May 2018, 106 schools have been completed and handed over to the school management. Currently, active in 75 schools, Humqadam-SCRP is improving the learning environment and educational outcomes with cost-effective and sustainable solutions for safe and sustainable facilities in schools.
